Newly ordained deacons have been told to serve the church of God and to work with its members in caring for the poor, the needy, the sick and all who are in trouble.
The Bishop Docese of Oru, the Right Rev. Geoffrey Chukwunenye, (PhD) gave the charge during the Trinity Diaconate Ordination Service of four deacons at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel, Mgbidi in Oru West LGA.
|The Right Rev. Chukwunenye charged them to strengthen the faithful, search out the careless and the indifferent and to preach the word of God in the places of their location and to assist the priest under whom they serve in organizing the congregation for worship and to perform other duties assigned to them.
He prayed God to grant them courage, strength and wisdom to serve Him and to make their ministries largely successful.
Preaching a sermon during the service, the Vicar of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ukpo in the Diocese of Awka, Anambra State, Venerable Solomon Chidoka, urged the newly ordained not to do anything that is likely to tarnish the image of the holy and prestigious order of priesthood.
Venerable Chidoka advised them not to neglect their responsibilities and stressed that they had an obligation to preach the gospel and to uphold the privilege of their calling.
He emphasized the need for them to wear the righteousness of God as their dress and to play up their talents to achieve charisma in their ministries.
He reminded them that they would give account of their stewardship before God at the appropriate time and urged the laity to assist the new deacons to succeed.
The highlight of the service was the taking of oath of allegiance, loyalty and obedience to the Bishop and the church and the thanksgiving by the deacons and their families as well as friends and well wishers.
