Genuine farmers in Imo State now have cause to smile as the Federal Fovernment’s revolving agricultural loan for micro and peasant farmers through the Central Bank would henceforth be distributed to beneficiaries through their Community Government Councils (GGC).
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mrs Adaora Ijezie, while address journalists at the Press Centre, Owerri last Monday.
She said that present government met a balance of N470m out of the one billion naira meant for the scheme in the State adding that the amount represented the first installment.
The commissioner pointed out that the beneficiaries would have accessed the second installment of the loan if the scheme had been properly ran by the last administration.
She further disclosed that a total of 17,000 farmers applied for the first installment apart from the number that applied recently noting that the money available is insufficient.
According to her, her office went round the communities to identify genuine farmers after which N500,000 was approved for two farmers in each community.
She assured that her ministry would be transparent in disbursing the loan noting that the current state government has zero-tolerance for corruption.
