Northern Christians challenge Muslims

The claim of some hardline politicians from the north that the 2015 Presidency is the turn of the zone has received a new twist as northern Christians insist that such a Nigerian President of Northern extraction must be a Christian as Muslims having monoplolised national leadership since independence.

The stand was  taken by the Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) in a communiqué after a recent emergency meeting in Kaduna.

To buttress their point, the communiqué listed the names of past Nigerian leaders from the North since independence – late Alhaji Ababakar Tafawa Balewa, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), late General Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, General Ibraihim Babangida (rtd), General Muhamadu Buhari (rtd), late General Sani Abacha, General Abubakar Abdulsalam and late Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’dua.

The body noted that among the long list that only General Gowon is a Christian arguing that “Justice, equity, fairness” show that the next president of Nigeria from the North must be a Christian”.

Noting that some northerners are already preparing themselves to contest for the presidency in 2015, the northern Christians reiterated that “the next person to be president of this country from the north must be a  Christian”.
