NAFEST ends without Imo contingent

The 2012 National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) has ended in Ilorin, Kwara State, without the participation of the Imo State contingent.

Sources said that it was the first time the Imo contingent was missing the national event where the Omenimo Dance troupe had taken the first position in traditional dance in 1988.

According to source, funds were not made available to the contingent for the trip.

The source, however, said that the Imo State Government was duly informed of the event by the National Council for Arts and Culture as well as the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation.

Our reporter gathered that Omenimo troupe was part of the Nigerian delegation to the Caribbeans in 1988 and had embarked on a tour of the United Kingdom where they raised funds used in completing the Imo Airport.

The troupe also was part of the National  contingent to Haiti and Japan in 2005 and Zaragoza, Spain in 2008.

This year’s Festival had as its theme, “Culture, Peace and Economic Empowerment” and presents  platform to showcase the rich culture and tourism endowment of the various states in the federation.
