Umuaka Igbo Taa NGO launched in Imo

An organization known as Umuaka Igbo Taa has been inaugurated in Owerri Imo State to promote the study and use of Igbo language.

At the inauguration, the Director of the group, Rev. Fr. Chikwendu Anyanwu, stressed the need for parents to inspire their children to speak Igbo language and uphold the people’s culture.

He said that every Igbo person should be proud of being Igbo, assuring that the language would not go extinct as it is speculated in some quarters.

The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Onyekachi Adamu Njoku, expressed happiness to be associated with the group and urged all hands on deck to ensure Igbo language regains its lost glory.

He commended Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and Eze Samuel Ohiri, (Eze Imo) for their efforts in promoting Igbo language and culture by emphasizing the use of the language in public functions.

Also speaking, the Director of Rochas Foundation, Dr. Nyerere Anyim, called for the reflection of Igbo language and culture in the school curriculum.

He called for this to be included as a yardstick of admission into the State’s higher institutions.

Speaking earlier at the ceremony sponsored by ABC Transport, the founder and President of the NGO, Mrs Chidi Opara Ibeneche, stated that their vision is to rotate the ceremony annually among the Igbo states so as to get them involved in promoting the language as well as checking moral decadence among youths through the reactivation of Igbo norms and values.

Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of 18 commandments of Umuaka Igbo Taa, written by the president to guide the Igbo child and the introduction of the  youth that grew up through the organisation some of who are now in institutions of higher learning.

The occasion also featured the distribution of certificates to participate from schools, churches and other organisations as they entertained with local songs, plays, drama, wrestling matches that depicts the Igbo culture.

Some of the institutions that participated were Ikenegbu Primary School, Royal King and Queen Chaplaincy, IMSU; New Generation International Primary School Owerri, Government School Owerri, Government Secondary School Owerri; Madonna Modern Secondary School, Rochas Foundation College; Alvana Model Secondary School and Christ the King Anglican Academy Owerri.

Others were Emmanuel College, FUTO Int. School Owerri, Christ the King Secondary School Okike Ngor, St Paul’s Owerri, Bosco Chaplaincy and St Theresa Primary School Obille.

Tummy Tummy Noddles Company sponsored by Local Akara delicacy and drinks to the NGO for the ceremony.
