I never dreamt of becoming bishop Consecration on Sundayin Lagos – Bishop-elect of Egbu

The Bishop-elect of the Anglican Diocese of Egbu, Ven. Geoffrey Enyinnaya Okorafor, who will be consecrated on Sunday, February, 24, 2013, has described his election as an act of God.

Speaking to newsmen shortly before departing for  a week-long  retreat at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral Church, Diocese of Lagos West, Ven Okorafor said that he did not dream of becoming a bishop.

He, however, gave God the glory, noting that the office of the Bishop has great challenges and asked for “God’s grace to  equip us in order to serve Him in this capacity.”

Ven. Okorafor will be  consecrated along with two other Bishops-elect, Very Rev. Simeon O. Borokim, Provost of the Cathedral Church of St. David Ijomu Street, for the Diocese of Akure, and Ven J.O Odedeji, Dean of the Archbishop Vining, Memorial Cathedral Church, for the Diocese of Lagos West.

The consecration which takes place on St. Mathias’ Day at the Cathedral Church of St. Jude Ebute Metta, Diocese of Lagos Mainland, features a formal service to be presided over by the Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, the Most Rev. Nicholas D. Okoh.

Archdeacon of Okpala Archdeaconry, Ven. Okorafor explained that he had submitted to the enduring power of the Holy Spirit, adding that God who led him all through his 16 years of service as a priest would also see him thorough the new call.

The Bishop-elect expressed gratitude to the pioneer Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Uchechukwu Iheagwam, “for deeming it necessary that a priest from within the Diocese would succeed him rather than someone from outside’, adding that “with this the entire clergy of the Diocese owe him a lot of gratitude for this confidence he has bestowed on us”.

Ven. Okorafor was born on February 21,1959, to the family of late Pa Christopher and Mama Margaret Okorafor of Umuokoro, Eziama, Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State.  He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Port-harcourt.

He also attended the Trinity Theological College, Umuahia. He was ordained deacon on July 6, 1997, and a priest the following year on December 6, 1998. He was collated a Canon of the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Egbu on April 2nd 2006 and inducted Archdeacon on June 7, 2008.

The Bishop-elect is married to Ngozi Geo Okorafor (Nee Ahumibe) and the marriage is blessed with a daughter, Chimdiuto Ihuoma Somtochi Okorafor.

Highpoints of the consecration programme include a Diocesan reception immediately after the service at Park Lane Hotels, Ajao Estate Lagos and another one at the Cathedral Church of St. Jude Hall, being arranged by sons and daughters of Ngor/Okpala resident in Lagos.

His enthronement has also been fixed for May 2, 2013 at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Egbu, Imo State.
