Mothering Sunday Message By Dr Mrs Eunice Okorocha

The steadfast love of our God never ceases, His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning (every week and every year). Great is your faithfulness O Lord, Great is thy faithfulness.

Through the mercies of God we have the privilege of celebrating another Mothering Sunday, to God be all the glory.

Every year, Mothering Sunday gives us the opportunity to appreciate our mothers in a special way. It is also a time for husbands to review how they practically show their love to their wives in word and action. They may also review how they have been assisting their wives in the upbringing of their children. The bible encourages husbands to sincerely love their wives if they want their prayers to be answered!!

1 Peter 3:7 says:

“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partners and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers”

Mothering Sunday therefore, could be a period when husbands and wives would review their roles and responsibilities in the family.

This period also affords us the opportunity to review our faith and service to God in the Home, Church and Society. A husband and wife should therefore, complement each other and not to compete with each other as we persevere in the Christian Race to heaven. May the Lord be our helper, Amen.

For us mothers, the bible says:

“The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down” Prov.14:1.

In line with our theme this year: ‘PERSEVERANCE IN THE CHRISTIAN FAITH” (Heb.10:35-39) the mother who is wise will:

Persevere in the Christian Race.

Persevere in her role as a mother, in caring for her husband and children.

Persevere in nurturing, teaching and training her children.

Persevere in righteousness and truth.

Persevere in controlling her tongue.

Persevere in evangelism and service to God.

May we all learn from the Biblical example of a mother like Eunice and a grandmother, Lois who made a lasting godly impact of sincere faith on their son and grandson Timothy (2 Tim.1:5). May we also be challenged by a mother of nine children. Mrs. Wesley who served God with faith and prayer and by teaching and training her children among who are John and Charles Wesley, whose ministries have greatly impacted many over many generations.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Heb.12:1) Amen.
