Transformation …As award committees wings into action By Rich Odu and Njideka Nwachukwu

A new phase of transformation has begun in Imo as the newly inaugurated, merit Award Committee swings into action to implement the Imo State Merit Award Scheme(ISMAS).

Addressing a press conference in Owerri on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Committee and Anglican Bishop of Owerri, Rt. Rev. Cyril C. Okorocha, PhD, said that the scheme aims at restoring integrity, transparency, accountability and the fear of God to “the heart of greatness and achievement in aspects of life in our society”.

Bishop Okorocha, whose committee is backed by a law passed by Imo State House of Assembly, said that motivating Ndi Imo and Nigerians was vital in achieving the transformation and re-orientation we seek, especially in our quest to decriminalize the people and society both at home and worldwide”.

He observed that the youth are desperate for role models to follow, noting that the award scheme aims at saying loud and clear that the pursuit of economic, political, academic and social greatness must henceforth be underscored by transparency and accountability.

According to him, the scheme insists that, to rescue our society from self-destruction, it is no longer enough that some people have ‘made it’ in whatever field of endeavour, rather the question of “how they made it” must be paramount.

He listed criteria for qualification for the award to include people whose positive efforts have impacted other lives as well as those who have shown genuine leadership in both remote and urban settings.

The people, he said, must also be known to be authentic role models due to their perceived integrity, transparency, accountability and fear of God.

The Committee called for details of such persons from the general public to be forwarded to the Secretary, Imo State Merit Award Scheme (ISMAS) through its  permanent secretary at Block 10, Imo State Secretariat , Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, Port Harcourt Road Owerri.

The write-ups, it emphasized, must be handwritten and enclosed in a sealed envelope, and must contain the candidate’s, contact address, phone number and e-mail address as well as the sender’s details.

Closing that is April 30, 2013.
