Two contestants from Isiala Mbano and Aboh Mbaise Local Governments of Imo State recently emerged ‘Opara Imo’ and ‘Ada Imo’ respectively after a marathon festive event steeped in Igbo culture.
Master Kenneth Nwadike from Isiala Mbano Local Government was voted ‘Opara Imo’ by a panel of judges entrusted with the onerous duty of picking from among over 400 contestants while Miss Annabel Obianuju Amadi from Aboh Mbaise Local Government won the ‘Ada Imo’ cultural beauty contest.
For winning the contests, the ‘Opara Imo’ and ‘Ada Imo’ each won the prizes of a brand new car, N1,000,000 cash and a holiday trip to South Africa.
The two contestants who came second in each category won a N1,000,000 prize and a holiday trip to Abuja while the winners of the third position in each category smiled home with N500,000 cash as well as a holiday trip to Corcorde Hotel, Owerri.
Presenting the prizes to ‘Opara Imo’ and ‘Ada Imo’, Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha explained that the exercise was meant to promote Igbo culture and language stressing that his administration is determined to preserve the culture and heritage of the Igbo nation so that the future generation shall know the history of their land.
In her address, the Commissioner for Community Government Council and Chieftaincy Matters, Barr. Lady Ugochi Nnanna-Okoro whose ministry promoted the contest, urged the Igbos to jealously guard Igbo culture and language to ensure they do not go into extinction.
