Bishop urges parents to engage children meaningfully during vacations

The Bishop, Diocese of Oru, The Right Rev. Geoffrey Chukwunenye PhD has called on parents to engage their children meaningfully and to be close to them during this long vacation.

The Right Rev Chukwunenye gave the advice at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel Mgbidi during the first Sunday service in the month of August.

Bishop Chukwunenye says many children adopt deviant behaviour because their parents do not care about the company they keep and do not occupy them meaningfully especially during holidays.

He listed extra mural studies, computer lessons and helping in domestic chores as some of the things the children should be guided to engage in during the period. Preaching on the topic: “Serving Christ” taken from Matthew 25: 34 – 46, the Bishop emphasized the need for parents to direct their children to see the need to spend their time in Church activities, pointing out that children who are brought up in the fear of God usually grow into useful adult life.

He also called on government at all levels to invest on youth development programmes and creation of employment opportunities for them as the surest means to curb crime in society.
