Editors plead for Imo Newspapers, IBC staff

By Chinasa Ogbonna

President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Mr. Femi Adesina, has appealed to the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, to revive Imo Newspapers and Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) to enable them function more effectively.

He also urged the government to integrate the retired staff of the newspaper in the state pensions scheme.

Mr Adesina made the plea when he led the standing committee of the guild on a courtesy visit to the Governor in Government House Owerri.

The editors who held a meeting in Owerri, thanked the governor for his support to the guild and commended his massive achievements in the state.

Receiving the editors, Governor Okorocha advised Nigerians to close ranks to stop the menace of Boko Haram and also to facilitate the release of the abducted school girls in Chibok, Borno State.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to de-emphasize politics at this critical time and focus more on the peace, security and unity of the country.

Governor Okorocha condemned the ugly developments occasioned by the Boko Haram insurgency, including the abduction of Chibok girls and other criminal activities in the country.

He appealed to all Nigerians to always pray to God for peace, security and unity of the country and for God to expose those behind these ugly acts.

The governor, who conducted the visiting editors round some of the developmental projects in the state, used the opportunity to advocate the introduction of state police in the country, noting that it takes the members of a community to fish out criminals in their areas as the Imo Security Network with the help of other security agencies in the state have been able to combat crime in state. The issue of Boko Haram armed robbery and kidnapping should be left in the hands of state police, he said.

He further noted that his administration has transformed the three geo-political zones in the state through developmental projects and restated the determination of his administration to take Imo State to an enviable height.
