Members of Avu Women’s Association in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State who returned for the annual August meeting last Tuesday shelved proceedings to protest against an alleged defilement of a three-and-a half year old girl by a grand-father also said to be related to her.
The irate women numbering over 200 stormed the suspects compound where they performed the traditional “Igbo-ahihia” whereby they blocked the entrance to the suspect’s house with piles of rubbish.
They then marched to the palace of the traditional ruler, Eze B.N. Okere, chanting angry songs.
The women demanded that the man should be promptly brought to book for the abomination while the Eze, through his spokesman, thanked them for their stand against evil, assuring them of his support.
According to report, the women were incensed by the fact that the suspect did not show remorse by writing a petition against the father of the defiled girl to the Police alleging he had been defamed.
The girl’s father was said to have reported the suspect to the Umuguma Police Station, but instead of reporting to the station the suspect was said to have gone straight to the Owerri Police with a petition against the girl’s father.
Sources in Avu told Christian Voice that on the fateful day, the grand-mother of the girl who has been living with her and her five-year-old elder brother since their mother’s death, left the two kids in the house to travel to Owerri to make purchases.
The woman was said to have told the suspect, a security man in one of the universities in Owerri, of her movement apparently to briefly extend watch over the kids before her return.
However, the suspect was said to have gone into the house and sent the five-year-old boy on an errand to buy some biscuits within which the suspect allegedly had carnal knowledge of the infant girl.
The matter came to the open when the boy came back with the biscuit to see that her sister’s pant was off and he chided her for removing her pants. At this point a woman who heard the boy’s voice was said to have rushed into the house only to see the suspect with his pants down and she raised an alarm.
