The husband of Senator Chris Anyanwu, Dr. Casmir Anyanwu, has described his wife as “one of the most virtuous women on earth, an embodiment of womanhood, a social crusader and a human right activist of international repute.”
The unprecedented public accolade to a wife by a husband was in reaction to a statement by the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, at the last Oru Owerre festival alluding to “husband-beaters” aspiring to be governors of the state.
Though no names were mentioned, governor Okorocha’s outburst has been widely interpreted as aimed at Senator Chris Anyanwu with whom there is no love lost, at least politically.
Interacting with journalists recently, the senator’s husband, a federal Commissioner representing Imo State in the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Responsibility commission said he did not believe Governor Okorocha alluded to his wife.
“Just because she attended the event like the other female political aspirants that were there also should not imply that the governor was talking about her”.
Dr. Anyanwu noted that she has been married to Chris for over 40 years describing her as tough and courageous and that “she always knows her limits because she has good upbringing and background”.
He maintained that he regarded the governor’s views as a general statement adding that his failure to mention names smacked of cowardice.
However, the former Managing Director of the defunct Progress Bank PLC advised that those occupying top political and management positions are expected to maintain certain level of decorum, “no matter what their upbringing and background were”.
