Imo ANA commended for promoting reading culture

The Imo State branch of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has been commended for maintaining the reading culture through its monthly readings.

In a special speech to declare the reading session open at the residence of Dr. Chucks Osuji in Owerri Imo State, the state Chairman of ANA, Mr. Chidozie Chukwubuike described Dr. Osuji as an invaluable asset to the creative writers’ community, Imo State and the entire humanity.

The session featured the reading of a chapter from Dr. Osuji’s novel, The Ugly Citizen which is a national call to a war against indiscipline.

The moderator of the reading exercise, Mr. Ndubuisi Nwokedi, brought a dramatic twist to the event by saluting the writer of the book with heroes’ tunes from his ever handy flute, the oja.

Nze Anusionwu Okoro also entertained the audience with Igbo proverbs that deal with self-preservation while Mr. Ndubuisi Nwokedi read a scene from Mr. Book, his recently published collection of plays for children.

Mrs. Nnenna Ihebom’s sensational reading from Igirigi Ututu, her collection on Igbo poems, also featured.

At the readings was a prominent university lecturer, Dr. Chidi Osuagwu, who described Dr. Osuji as having an indomitable spirit.

Other writers and dignitaries who graced the event included Lady Chinyere Ujunwa Okere, Dr. Lambert Onumaegbu, Chief Chukwuma Ibezute, Juli Odinma, a Magistrate of the state judiciary and a host of younger writers who expressed gratitude for the experience the reading offered them.

Mr. Camillus Ukah, a former chairman of the association, called on writers in the state to come out enmass and join the association.

Dr. Osuji in a closing speech, expressed appreciation for the honour to host his fellow writers. He promised to continue to support the association and to be part of the forthcoming convention of the association here in Owerri.
