The unrelenting social media war among the supporters of former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi and his successor and current governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano appears to have spilled out of control.
Worried by the development, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor has called on the two to call their supporters to order.
In his charge at the St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka last Sunday, the bishop observed that the continued silence of the two implied that they facility backed the internet war among their supporters.
Bishop Ezeokafor condemned the crude and unedifying language used by either side in the Internet against each other and said it had become imperative that the two principals make a joint statement calling their supporters to order and dissociating themselves from the media war.
“Let them not tell us that they are not aware of the social media reports because you are bound to shudder at the type of falsehood these people peddle on the Internet,” the bishop said.
Noting that the reports are very damaging the bishop called for peace among the supporters of the two leaders stressing that political differences are inevitable but that the populace will have better lives under conditions of peace.
Though former governor Obi worked assisduously for the election of his successor in 2013 they soon parted ways politically with Obi joining the then ruling PDP and abandoning the APGA under which he came to power in Anambra State and which the leader of the party, iconize late General Odumegwu-Ojukwu literally handed over to him before his death.
Though former governor Obi campaigned vigorously for former president Jonathan, he lost the presidential election paving the way for governor Obiano’s APGA to sweep all the seats in the Anambra House of Assembly.
Analysts contend that had the former president been re-elected, that the Anambra State House of Assembly would have been won by the former president’s party, PDP though the party’s well-known manipulations.
