Orlu youths protest high accident rate … Berate transport company

The high rate of fatal accidents involving drivers of a state-owned transport company from south-south may force residents of the route on which their vehicles ply in Imo State to call for a ban on the vehicles plying routes through their area.

According to Christian Voice investigation, the company’s drivers are notorious for over-speeding and reckless driving which allegedly led to the death of about six persons in the last two years.

Respondents lamented that none of the erring drivers has been arrested and prosecuted in court as, according to them, the drivers have the habit of escaping the scenes of the accidents and reporting themselves to the police after which, nothing would be heard of the cases.

Sources said in one pathetic instance recently, two male siblings on a motorcycle were crushed to death at Nkwommiri Market Junction, Amaigbo, Nwangele local government of Imo State with the driver escaping the scene leaving the passengers at the mercy of irate mob.

In another case a father of three children was said to have met his untimely death in a similar manner when one of the company’s vehicles on high speed hit the man from behind at Eke Eziachi-Nkwerre road leading to his instant death.

Some irate youths from Amike Autonomous Community who spoke to our reporter therefore called on the relevant agencies to check the excesses of the company’s drivers.

They recalled that three of their sons have lost their lives through the recklessness of the company’s drivers warning that if nothing is done urgently they would be forced to ensure that the company’s vehicles are stopped from plying the route.
