Alvan varsity: Provost raises hope

The provost of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, (AIFCE) Owerri,  Dr. Blessing Ijioma, has assured that the Alvan University case shall be treated with the right consultation and dialogue.
The provost, who returned to her former post following the shelving of the university status on the institution, was speaking to the national executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) who called on her in her office recently.
Dr. Ijioma recalled that the fight for university states for AIFCE started over 20 years ago, adding that the federal Government is working for the good of everyone.
She, however, called for patience until all grey areas are worked out, saying that as an appointee of the president, she must always obey presidential orders.
The clarification came weeks after the institution had erupted in protest when news arrived that the institution was to revert to its status as college of education.
Dr. (Mrs) Ijioma commended the NANS for engaging in consultations and dialogue in their bid to protect the interest of the Nigeria student.
In his remarks, the President of NANS, Comrade Tijani Usman, who led the delegation, said that they were in the college because of the upgrading of the institution to a university by former President Goodluck Jonathan and the subsequent putting on hold of the declaration.
According to him, NANS is collaborating and interfacing with all stakeholders to seek for clarification and know the way forward.
A former president of the college’s Students Union Government (SUG), Comrade Orient Nwadike, who was among the delegates, urged Alvan students to be calm as they had discovered that the order to return to college status was a Presidential directive rather than the machination of an individual.
In Comrade Usman’s entourage were student leaders from across the nation, includving the NANS financial secretary, Comrade Yusuf Molammed, PRO Eziekiel Nwankwo of the Imo State Polytechnic Unmagwo, comrades Chidi Aguocha, Igwe Ude-Umanta, among others.
Also present were Comrade Solomon Okafor, the current SUG President of AIFCE and other SUG members of the college.
