Bishop moves to stop expensive burials …Bars priests from officiating at such funerals

Irked by the expensive and flamboyant burial ceremonies among Christians in the South-East zone of Nigeria, a Catholic prelate has taken practical measures to bring the practice to an end in his area of jurisdiction.
The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has ordered all priests under him not to, henceforth, officiate at flamboyant burial ceremonies.
Giving the order recently at a meeting with his priests, the bishop warned that any priest flouting the order would be sanctioned.
Bishop Ezeokafor explained that by the new directives, there should be no sharing of souvenirs at the burial of deceased members of his diocese while the serving of food must be moderate.
The bishop was so disturbed by the trend that he was compelled to make a comparison between Christian burial rites and those of their Muslim  counterparts and recommended to Southern Nigerians to emulate the Northern Nigerian Muslims who bury their dead with utmost simplicity and promptitude, devoid of fanfare.
