The Ash Wednesday, celebrated in Christendom worldwide for 2016 last week, is important in the history of the church as it marks the beginning of Lent.
The Vicar of St. John’s (Ang) Church, New Owerri, Engr. Ven. Obioma Okere made the explanation in his sermon at the evening service to mark the Ash Wednesday.
He described Lent as a time of self-denial for Christians through self-denial by fasting and prayer.
Among some Christian denominations, Ash Wednesday is marked by smearing the face of the faithful with the ash made from burning of palm fronds from the previous year’s Palm Sunday.
The significance is to remind Christians that they are from dust and will go back to the dust.
