A 20-year-old man was lynched to death at Ekeonunwa Market, Owerri Imo State, recently when he tried to steal the sum of N50,000 belonging to a shop owner.
Eye witness account had it that the man came into the shop during the busy period as buyers crowded the owner.
As people haggled prices of goods they wanted to buy, the shop lifter reportedly made away with a bundle of currency notes totaling N50,000.
Luck ran against him, as he was caught before escaping with the loot, and the crowd that gathered began to beat him after recovering the N50,000.
The intervention of two policemen who arrived the scene to rescue him did not eventually save him as he died on the way to the police station.
One of the traders attributed the rising spate of shop lifting and other criminal activities since the last Yuletide to the hard times, occasioned by unemployment and aggravated by the recent lay-offs and retirements in the state.
