Gov Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has stressed the need for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to be trained in self defence in view of the incessant harassment of the corps members in some states.
The governor was speaking when the new director-general of NYSC, Bari Gen. Sule Zakari Kazaure, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Owerri.
He called for the immediate disarming of Fulani herdsmen who appear to be responsible for most of the crisis across the nation.
He noted that the corps members reject postings for fear of molestation as many have been killed in some states.
He, however, urged them to overlook the present crises in the nation and see their assignment as a sacrifice.
Owelle Okorocha noted that the NYSC programme was aimed at national integration and was supposed to foster unity in the country.
He urged the new DG to live up to expectation.
“I am sure you will never be found wanting in your new assignment, so take the advantage to serve to prove your worth,” he said.
Earlier, in his speech, Brig. Gen. Kasaure praised the governor for building a new orientation camp for the state NYSC and expressed optimism that, when completed, the camp would be one of the best in the country.
“This gesture is not a surprise considering your love and passion for education,” he told the governor.
The new NYSC DG said that he was in the state as part of the familiarization tour of the orientation camps in the federation.
