The entire women of Owerri Nchi-ise, last Thursday, stormed the Imo State Government House on a peaceful demonstration against the state government’s decision to relocate Eke-Ukwu Owerri.
The demonstrating women  took off from Owerri Community Assembly in Somachi by 7a.m. after conducting fervent prayers in which they sought divine intervention, in the matter.
The women who came out in their thousands and dressed in black attire, chanted slogans in anger and brought traffic to a stand-still for several hours around the Okigwe road by Wetheral Road roundabout Owerri.
They brandished screaming placards, some of which read “Owell, you have sold the biggest market in Owerri (SOMACHI), “Eke-Ukwa is our ancestral market,” “Use your spibat Estate as Market,” “we no go greed” and many others.
However, the advise of the Deputy Chief of Staff Government House, Hon. Kingsley Uju, to the women to send a delegation of five leaders to dialogue with the governor was rebuffed as they vowed to resist any attempt to relocate their ancestral market.
Addressing the demonstrators,   the interim President-General of Owerri Communities Assembly, Chief Dr. Christian Oweaya Anukam appealed to the women to remain calm, adding that the Owerri Communities would resist any attempt to relocate their market.
He warned that any trader in Eke-Ukwu Owerri who parked out of the market in obedience to the government’s directive has lost his stall.
Also addressing the demonstrators, a community leader, Chief Sir Felix Njoku, appealed for calm for now since the men are solidly behind them in their demand.
