Eke Ukwu Owerri palavar: OCA Chairman calls for caution

The Interim Chairman of the Owerri Community Assembly (OCA), Chief Oweaya Anukam (Agbawo Dike Izu) has called for caution over the planned relocation of the Eke Ukwu Owerri, the ancestral market of the Owerri people, saying that it tantamounts to “dislocation of the people’s cherished tradition”.
Chief Anukam gave the warning when the OCA members called on the member represent the Owerri Municipal Council in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Lugard Osuji.
OCA, which rose recently from a meeting to declare the planned removal against the people’s best interest, told the lawmaker that no Owerri man can ever permit the relocation.
The assembly advised their representative to always consult with the right persons, reminding him that elders of the land and community members, not contractors and traders, are the people that matter in such sensitive issues.
They urged the lawmaker to be courageous in telling the executive arm of the government the minds of the people.
Hon Osuji, who is also the House Majority Leader, stated that he was never in support of the relocation and only called for a remodeling of the market.
