Imo landlords kick against arbitrary tax

Landlords in Imo State are raising eyebrows at summons purported to have emanated from the Customary Courts over alleged default in payment of Tourism and Infrastructural Development Levy.
One of the landlords who spoke to Christian Voice on Thursday complained that there was no demand notice issued to him, nor was there any sensitisation on the existence of such a law, wondering whether it was a hoax or a ploy to extort money from them.
He, however, said that he would be at the court to verify.
One of the summons read that the Imo State Board of Internal Revenue/Ministry of Internal Resources and Pension Matters, as plaintiff was sueing the landlord/occupier of the building for default in paying Tourism and Infrastructural Development Levy for some years mentioned under law No 20 of 2011.
Efforts to reach the Customary Court Registrar or the Ministry proved abortive.
