How gunmen kidnapped, murdered Catholic priest

The police in Imo State have begun a massive manhunt of killers of a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Cyriacus Onunkwo, who was allegedly snatched from his vehicle in Orlu town in Orlu Local Government Area penultimate Friday morning by gunmen.
Fr. Onunkwo was said to have returned home for the burial of his father when the hoodlums kidnapped him and forced him into a waiting car boot.
He was found dead the following day.
The Police confirmed the kidnap and subsequent murder when the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Chris Ezike, told newsmen that following a search, a body was discovered in a bush in Omuma Village in Oru East Local Government Area on Saturday.
The corpse was identified as that of Fr. Onunkwo.
Police say the late cleric’s car was discovered intact, with nothing removed from it.
Also, his body did not bear any gunshot or stab wounds, leading to speculations that he may have been strangled.
No arrests had been made, but the police commissioner says that the police are still working to find the abductors of the priest.
In a similar development, the Rivers State Police Command has announced the rescue of 14 persons who were kidnapped while travelling in a commercial bus along the Ndele/Rumuji axis of the state.
Gunmen had abducted the passengers on Monday night and dragged them into the bush. Initial reports had indicated that 11 passengers were abducted.
But the police had put the figure at 14.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, the rescue cames after a major operation in the four communities – Ndele, Rumuji, Rumuekpe and Ebele – around the area.
The Police PRO said the command eventually rescued those abducted after combing the bushes and using tear gas in spots believed to house the kidnappers’ den in the process, the kidnappers abandoned their victims.
