A top member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, has asked bishops and general overseers of churches to speak out against bad governance and oppression of the masses in the present dispensation.
Senator Araraume made the statement while speaking as a special guest at the just- concluded 3rd Session of the 3rd Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Ikeduru, held at St. Simon’s Anglican Church Ugirike in the Ikeduru Council Area of Imo State.
The senator, who represented Okigwe senatorial zone, said that in the midst of tyranny, oppression and bad leadership, the church, as a veritable umpire ought to speak out no matter whose ex is gored.
He regretted that for reasons best known to them the present church leaders prefer to remain in their comfort zone, keeping quiet while wickedness, atrocities, bad leadership and man’s inhumanity to man continue to soar unabated.
According to him, the church is supposed to speak out by rebuking evil so that the society would be directed toward the part of sanity.
The astute politician said that all over the world, the church had championed the cause of freedom and had given the common man hope. He said for instance, during the heydays of the President Ferdinand Marcos’s, despotic regime in the Philippines, a Catholic Archbishop, Cardinal Sin, mobilized the entire people against his regime, thereby liberating the people from bad leadership.
He also said that during the apartied regime in South Africa, Bishop Desmond Tutu of the Anglican Communion fought on the side of the masses and South Africa is today a black majority rule.
He wondered why in Nigeria church leaders keep silent in the face of tyranny and oppression.
On the state of affairs in Imo State, the party chieftain said that it is better imagined, adding that roads in Imo State cannot be constructed, without consideration on the quality of job done.
He called on the people of Imo State to “shine their eyes” as the 2019 elections are around the corner, and that they should search for men of impeccable character who would deliver instead of deceivers and men of double standard, as the case is today.
