Following the attack on him by those described as over-zealons party supporters last weekend, the Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, the Most Rev. Anthony Obinna is said to have gone into consultation with the Holy Spirit.
Director of Communications in the Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. George Nwachukwu, PhD, who spoke to Christian Voice on the incident, said that many among the faithful and concerned citizens had sought to see the Archbishop, but that he had chosen to stay away in consultation with the Holy Spirit so as to give a prayerful reaction to the incident.
He, however, could not predict the next move of the archdiocese and the faithful among them but said that there was anger in the congregation.
“The Archbishop has accepted the incident the way it presented itself. But we can’t say what the priests and all the Christians can do because all of them are angry. The attack on the Archbishop is an attack on Christianity, the right thinking Imolites, and an attack on the masses”, he said.
The Archdiocesan spokesman said that no government official or any of the attackers who, he said, rained abuses on the Archbishop had shown remorse.
Narrating the incident, Fr. George, who said he was present, told Christian Voice Newspaper that trouble started after His Grace, Most Rev. Obinna, had urged the people to endeavour to get their voters’ card, and remarking also that Gov. Rochas Okorocha’s son-in-law and his current Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu, who was also at the mass, did not possess the experience to pilot affairs as Governor of Imo State.
He had also warned of imposition of a candidate on the people and the need for due process in election of the governor.
The occasion was a burial mass service for the mother of Alex Mbata at St. Michael’s Catholic Church Ngwoma, Obube in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to Fr. George, the Archbishop chose to speak towards the end of the mass, during which two opposing persons got up to counter as well as affirm his position on the happenings in the state.
The ensuring commotion, he said, started after one of the men who spoke scored the present dispensation in the state low in performance and called for a change.
The men who surged towards the altar, according to Fr. George Nwachukwu, had targeted the Archbishop for their attack rather.
He said that the Chief of Staff Uche Nwosu, his mother-in-law and wife of the governor, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha, ENTRACO boss Jeff Nwoha, as well as other high ranking members of the government were at the burial mass.
