‘His Excellency’, No … You are not perfect before God – Bishop tells politicians

Bishop Cyril C. Okorocha of the Anglican Diocese of Owerri has pointed out that leaders in civilized countries do not answer “His Excellency” or “Her Excellency” because they know that they are not perfect before God.
The Bishop, who spoke in a popular radio programme, “The   Evangelical Hour”, was referring to political office holders who see such appellations as a must for them, when being addressed.
He described true democracy as a situation where the best in rulership, stating that when the righteous is on the throne the people rejoice.
The prelate, who made the remarks as the nation marked its 19th year of uninterrupted democracy, also called on church leaders to ensure they recovered their sense of accountability to God and not to compromise.
He said that accountability is the bedrock in every human endeavour, especially in the house of God, regretting that most church leaders have lost their moral authority, hence the need to re-inculcate in them the sense of self-worth among the people.
According to him, “pastoring or preaching is now performing; people don’t have respect for preachers of the gospel and as a result our church leaders have lost their sense of homour and respect”.
He, therefore, called on both the political and religious leaders to see themselves as representatives of God, while bearing in mind that God’s judgement awaits all, whether big or small.
