Owerri roads: Well done Gov Rochas, but…

We wish to note with joy the frenetic zeal with which repair work has resumed in the Imo State capital, Owerri.
The mere sight of the workmen and their equipment as they embark on the long awaited fixing of the roads and streets in Owerri Municipality these couple of days has restored smile on the faces of both residents and visitors.
We commend the Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, and his administration for this welcome engagement on the roads.
Government, in the execution of its Urban Renewal Programme, embarked on a massive structural and infrastructural make over that peaked at the high point of the rains that made government’s good intentions look like a curse.
Businesses were adversely affected as the roads became impassable; even pedestrian movement became a nightmare.
While this relief job is ongoing, we would like to point out to the authorities the urgency of prioritizing the assignment.
Major road arteries like Chukwuma Nwoha and Dick Tiger that offer a diversion of vehicular traffic from the city centre need to be expeditiously attended to.
Douglas Road, as well as Wetheral  Road that are virtually synonymous with the name OWERRI, should also receive spontaneous consideration.
We are glad that other residential areas like the World Bank housing estate are also being put right.
As the workmen go about their assignment, we implore the citizenry to offer maximum support to help ameliorate the suffering that has been the lot of Owerri residents for so long a time.
Kudos to the Imo State government for practically seizing the day on the road remediation and hope this will be sustained.
