A primary school pupil collapsed at the weekend at Umuguma, headquarters of the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, while she was waiting for the school bags to be distributed by a team of Imo State government officials.
Teachers and good Samaritans at the arena however, succeeded in reviving the seven-year-old Hauwou (other names withheld) a Primary One pupil of a school in Obinze, after she had fainted under the hot afternoon sun.
On the alleged invitation of the wife of the Imo State Governor, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha, parents and guardians of all the primary schools in the local government had gathered with their wards at the LGA headquarters as early as 9.00a.m to pick the bags. Our reporter who was at scene said that the first Lady who was scheduled to distribute the free school bags to the pupils, arrived at about 2.20p.m when the teachers were having a hectic time controlling the crowd.
Three buses filled with the school bags had accompanied the First Lady into the arena which, later turned into a campaign ground and some people started murmuring in the crowd as they wondered whether the children had permanent voter’s cards (PVC).
Effort to reach any member of the team to comment on the incident failed.
Meanwhile, a social crusader and politician, Hon. Charles Ikenna, has condemned the recent sharing of school bags and gift of N1,000 to school children by the wife of the Governor, Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha and Uche Nwosu.
Speaking to journalists in Owerri recently, Hon. Ikenna posited that gift of N1,000 and school bags few days to the governorship and State House of Assembly Elections tantamounts to advanced vote buying because the school children who are innocent, will always go home to show their parents N1,000 and bags given to them.
Hon. Ikenna described the gift of bags as evil gift, saying that those bags are full of disaster.
