Cancer control centre soon in Owerri

Worried by the increase in number of cancer patients in the South East Nigeria and coupled with lack of adequate health facilities for the patients, Asaigbo Cancer Care Initiative has advanced plans to build Cancer Control Center in Owerri,Imo State capital.
Prince Mike Akubueze, the president of Asaigbo Cancer Initiative, disclosed this in Owerri  over the weekend during the inauguration of the non-governmental organization at Ahiajoku International Cultural Centre.
Akubueze said that the organization over the years has been assisting and supporting cancer patients all over Nigeria, noting that their commitment increased following the emergence of Asaigbo reigning Queen, Queen Ugochinyere Ukasoanya, whose passion to help many cancer patients is encouraging.
He pointed out that they are being motivated to build the Cancer Control Center as part of their commitments in curbing the spread of the disease by providing the basic materials and equipment needed for screening, test and treatment.
The president further unveiled their plans to embark on sensitization and awareness creation campaign starting with the 27 council areas of the state so as to inform the people on the need for early detection and treatment.
Earlier, in her speech, Queen Sarah Ukasoanya said her passion to help cancer patients grew out of the love she had for her God mother, Prophetess Ijeoma Okoro, who died as result of late detection of the disease.
Ukasoanya further canvassed the need to enlightened people on the risk involved on late detection noting that cancer can be managed if not cured when detected early.
She reiterated the NGO commitment in building a world class cancer center in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) and cautioned people against excessive consumption of alcohol, sugar and tobacco among other things.
The Queen also appealed to various tiers of government, corporate bodies and good spirited individuals to assist the NGO in their efforts to reduce cancer incidences in Nigeria.
