N.2 million ransom lands IMSU student, brother in trouble

A 22-year-old female student of the Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri, (names withheld) and her younger brother, Uchenna, 19, were among the 54 suspected criminals paraded last Thursday by the Imo State Police Command at the Command headquarters in Owerri.
According to the police, she was arrested in connection with the alleged kidnap of one Happiness from Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, who reportedly died in their custody.
She was alleged to have given her brother her bank details for the payment of the ransom and was nabbed at the bank while trying to collect the money.  The police disclosed that the two siblings and another suspect, Chukwuemeka, were arrested following credible information on the kidnap of the victim on  August 30, 2019.
Addressing newsmen, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, CP Rabin Ladodo, said that the 54 suspects were arrested for various criminal offences ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, child stealing/trafficking, rape, unlawful possession of firearms as well as other crimes and will be charged to court as soon as investigation is at advanced stage.
He solicited for the support of all and sundry, stressing that it is the desire of the command to rid Imo State of bad elements.
The Police boss, therefore, warned parents and guardians to warn their children and wards to shun crime and criminality, adding that the long arm of the law will definitely catch up with them if they don’t.
CP Ladodo commended the press for their efforts in enlightening the public about the activities of the police and advised them to always remain professional in the discharge of their duties.
In an interview with the press, the IMSU student, who hails from Amauzari in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, narrated how she was arrested by the police at the bank, while trying to withdraw money from her account.
She lamented that she was a victim of circumstance, having been implicated by her brother, Uchenna who deceived her into using her bank account to receive money, which unknown to her, turned out to be kidnap ransom.
The female suspect further explained that her brother never explained what the money he wanted to use her account to receive was actually for, even when she asked.
A breakdown of the suspects shows that 19 of them were arrested for kidnapping, 23 for armed robbery, 18 for cultism, three for child stealing/trafficking, one each for rape, defilement and unlawful possession of firearms
While three robbery/kidnap suspects died during gun battle, five kidnap victims were rescued and one stolen child recovered.
Items recovered from the suspects include 12 vehicles, eight locally made guns, four English automatic rifles ammunition, phones, motorcycles and several other items.
