A suspect in a kidnapping case, popularly known as “Prophet” was among those paraded recently in Owerri in connection with the case and other crimes around Imo by the state police command in Owerri.
Acting on a tip off, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) had stormed the hideouts of the suspects where they were arrested.
The state police spokesman who paraded the suspects said that they had confessed to the murder of one Obinna (23) from Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State who was reported to have been kidnapped but was later found dead.
Obinna’s decomposing body was discovered in a bush along Ama-Ugba road, Emeke Agbala, in the Owerri North LGA.
According to police, the suspects were found in possession of the victim’s handset and a Toyota Camry car.
One of the suspects who was 24 years old, had allegedly claimed to have known the whereabouts of the deceased kidnap victim and had obtained the sum of N960,000 from his relations with a promise to produce the victim. He, however, was said to have failed.
“Prophet” and his gang, according to police, were searched and some exhibits recovered from them, such as one locally made gun, one expended cartridge, one handset with its simcard belonging to the deceased, vehicle number plate for WER 34GL, charms, a copy of the bible, bones suspected to be those of human beings, candles, and one black colour Toyota Camry car with Registration number AKL80AG belonging to the victim.
A total of 14 suspects were paraded for the crime and other sundry offences, including murder, cultism, unlawful possession of firearms obtaining by false pretenses, among others.
Other items recovered included machete and wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
