In these times

Matthew 24:3-14. You may be one of those asking what is going on in this world, you’re not alone. Nothing is the same anymore. Social media has worsened the situation sometimes deliberately releasing false news designed to cause anxiety, fear and panic. That shouldn’t be a surprise since there is a time determined by God when everything will get out of hand and the normal everyone knows will become abnormal. But consider what you see or hear in the news media through the lens of Scriptures to gain knowledge and not be deceived or fearful. Bible prophecies give indications that the things happening now are associated with signs and events preceding the return of our Lord Jesus, a time when there is a dramatic change in the social and spiritual conditions on the earth. Wars and rumours of wars on the increase, a nation against another one such as Russia has invaded sovereign Ukraine, famines, pandemics, frequent earthquakes, uncontrolled flooding destroying lives and properties in several places of the world. Demonic doctrines abound while false prophets, teachers and false messiahs who are deceiving many people including Christians have increased. These are the troubling times prophesied by Christ (Matt. 24:4-8; Luke 21:8-11). Our Lord Jesus likened the times as the days of Noah and Lot when immorality, evil and wickedness became unbearable that God destroyed the whole earth by flood saving Noah (Genesis 6:13; 1 Peter 3:20), while the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire and brimstone from heaven in Lot’s time (Genesis 19:16,24-26).
Is the society today any way different from the times of Noah and Lot? Current happenings in the world have some similarities with the days of Noah and that of Lot. Shall the world escape the judgement that is coming upon the world? Prior to Jesus coming back, life will go on as usual and okay. People will tolerate and celebrate sin except those desiring to live a righteous life (2 Peter 2:7-8). But Jesus said, “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of Son of Man” (Luke 17:26-30). Do you feel unhappy and grieved by the pervasive evil and wickedness, unkindness, immorality and violence that are happening? Apostle Paul calls it perilous times that will come in the last days when iniquity shall abound (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Living in these challenging times requires seeking for God’s mercy and for a believer to have his hope and anchor in Christ and in the promises of God. Thank God who knows those who are his and demands that those who name the name of Christ to depart from iniquity (2 Timothy 2:19).
As Christians our mission is to win men for Christ as Jesus commanded, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matt. 24:14). The task is to help people know Christ and be transformed without the Christian being lured to conform to the world for Satan wants Christians to conform to the world through the world’s systems, beliefs, values and philosophy. A plan designed to squeeze Christians into the mould and on refusal Christians are persecuted but we’re to endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ (2 Tim. 2:3). Since we are experiencing these things now our attitude to the world and to God will make the difference if we are living as people eager for the return of the Lord. It requires we have hope, be built up in our faith, and take personal responsibility to seek the Lord and prepare ourselves through bible study and prayer and fellowships to encourage and strengthen one another, “but exhorting one another and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25), and every eye will see Jesus when he returns (Rev. 1:7). Jesus has gone to prepare a place but will come back again to take those who believe in his name (John 1:12). In these times, God is calling his children to stand firm and steadfast to ensure to be among the elect Jesus will welcome in his Kingdom with these comforting words, “Come, you are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you since creation” (Matthew 25:34). Maranatha!
